New Writer in the Spotlight: Samuel Bjork

I’M READING AGAIN after a week of reader’s block. I started a book by a new writer/book that’s been getting much attention: Samuel Bjork’s I’M TRAVELING ALONE.  It lands in US bookstores Feb 23rd but it’s already out in the UK which is where I grabbed my copy. The translator is one I’m familiar with: Charlotte Barslud. I’M TRAVELING ALONE is a  bestseller in Germany, Spain and Scandinavia. I tend to pay attention to that because that’s how Jo Nesbo got picked up.

I’m twenty pages in and so far the writing is solid but if you are not a fan where children are the victim then you might want to skip it.  Who is Samuel Bjork? I did a quick internet search and Samuel Bjork is a pen name. He’s a musician, artist and playwright who translated Shakespeare. Is this guy for real? His book an “international success” that’s garnered “critical acclaim” everywhere.

Samuel Bjork - is he better than Jo Nesbo? I will read it and see for myself.

His dustjacket doesn’t proclaim him the next Jo Nesbo but comparisons have come on pretty quick with stuff like “Watch out Jo Nesbo!” from critics or people who realize that they’re both Norwegian writers. To compare anyone to Jo Nesbo is to tell me that his characters are solid, he’s knowledgable about world affairs, can write action well and features broken but interesting characters who might be a little over the top.

So, Samuel Bjork, expectations are super high. I want  to join readers in singing your praises, too. So, off to read a good chunk of this book and will report back later.
